The most common DGT fines: what they cost and how to pay half

The DGT closed 2025 with a record: over six million fines, an average of 12 per minute. And the vast majority come down to the same five offences as always. If you drive around Tenerife — with the speed cameras on the TF-1 and TF-5 busier than ever — it pays to know exactly what each slip-up costs and how to pay only half.

Speeding and phones: where most points are lost

• Speeding: between 100 and 600 €, with a loss of 2 to 6 licence points depending on how far over you were. Minor excesses usually stay at 100 € with no points; going more than 30-40 km/h over the limit is serious-offence territory.
• Phone in hand: 200 € and 6 points, even if you are just holding it without using it. Handling it while it sits in a cradle: 200 € and 3 points. Alongside alcohol, this is the offence that costs the most points.

Expired ITV: the most avoidable fine

• Driving with an expired ITV: 200 €. No points, but the DGT's plate-reading cameras flag it automatically — nobody even needs to pull you over.
• Unfavourable ITV result: 200 € if you drive anywhere other than the garage or back to the test station.
• Negative ITV result: 500 € and the vehicle is immobilised.

Seatbelt and parking

• No seatbelt: 200 € and 4 points for the driver. If an adult passenger is the one unbuckled, they pay the fine themselves and no points are involved.
• Parking on a pedestrian crossing, pavement, bus lane or disabled space without a permit: 200 €, classed as a serious offence.
• Minor parking offences (expired blue-zone ticket, brief double parking) run around 80-100 € depending on the town hall.

The 50% discount: 20 days to decide

Almost all DGT fines are cut in half if you pay within 20 calendar days of notification: the 200 € phone fine becomes 100 €. You can pay:

• Through the miDGT app or the official portal (sede.dgt.gob.es), by card.
• By calling 060, available 24 hours a day.
• At partner banks and Correos post offices.

Two things to keep in mind: paying with the discount means waiving your right to appeal, and if you let the voluntary period lapse, the debt ends up with the tax agency plus a 20% surcharge. The points, however, come off either way — whether you pay early or late.
