Connected V16 beacon: Spain retires warning triangles in 2026

Since 1 January 2026, warning triangles are history in Spain: they are no longer valid for signalling a breakdown or an accident. The only legally accepted device is the connected V16 beacon. And careful — not just any beacon: it must be certified and transmit your position to the DGT 3.0 platform. Here is the whole story, no fluff.

What it is and why the change

The V16 is a flashing amber light with a magnetic base that goes on the roof of the car. When you switch it on, it automatically sends the vehicle's location to DGT 3.0, which warns other drivers via road panels and navigation apps. The big win is safety: you no longer have to get out of the car and walk along the hard shoulder to place triangles — a manoeuvre that caused fatal run-overs every year.

Inside there is a GPS chip and a non-removable SIM card, with connectivity included for at least 12 years, no fees or subscriptions.

Who it affects (and who it doesn't)

• Cars and vans registered in Spain: mandatory.
• Motorcycles: exempt, although the DGT recommends carrying one.
• Foreign-registered vehicles: may keep using triangles.

One important detail: outside Spain the V16 does not replace triangles. If you drive around Europe, carry both.

Fines: what it can cost you

• Not carrying the beacon, or carrying a non-certified or non-connected one: €80 (€40 with prompt payment).
• Being immobilised on the road without properly signalling the vehicle: up to €200.

The DGT has announced flexibility in the first weeks, prioritising information over sanctions. But it is not a moratorium: the obligation is fully in force.

How to choose a certified beacon

The market is full of cheap "V16" beacons that only emit light: since 2026 they are not valid. Before buying:

• Check that the exact model appears on the official list of certified devices on the DGT website.
• Look for certification by the authorised laboratories IDIADA or LCOE.
• Make sure it says "connected" and that the included connectivity covers at least 12 years.
• Typical price of certified models: between €20 and €60 depending on the brand.
• Be wary of marketplace bargains with no visible certification number.

And a tip from the workshop: keep it in the glovebox, not in the boot. The whole point is being able to activate it and place it on the roof without exposing yourself to traffic.
